Owls swallow their prey whole, including fur and bones. However, they are not able to digest these materials so they regurgitate them. The pellets are usually found under trees where the owls roost. Each pellet often contains one skeleton of the animal the owl ate, usually mice, gophers and voles. The pellets can be dissected, and the skeletons reconstructed. Students can learn a great deal about an owl’s diet and habits by examining owl pellets. Owl Pellet Program Coordinator Kathy McPherson kathleenamc@yahoo.com. Please contact Kathy to obtain owl pellets PVAS provides barn owl pellets free to teachers within our area, the Pomona Valley of California and, when we have enough, to teachers elsewhere. We usually supply classes 4th grade and up. Our pellets have been frozen and dried to kill any small organisms or bacteria.
Audubon Adventures is an education program that focuses on different aspects of wildlife and conservation. It’s a fun way to teach 4th – 6th grade students about the wildlife around them. A class subscription features newspapers for students, a teachers guide & resources, and a classroom video.
Teachers receive the materials, including 4 editions of newspapers, at the beginning of the school year, so they can plan ahead and use the subjects in the most appropriate order for them. The fifth surprise edition is sent in the Spring. Subjects change every year. Past years topics have included Song Birds, Snakes, Pond Life and Wildflowers.
An Audubon Adventures subscription is $35 per year, $40 for Spanish. If you live in the PVAS service area order Audubon Adventures through PVAS and receive a partial sponsorship. You pay only a $10 subscription, PVAS pays the remainder. Contact:
